Gender Leptivity

Hello! This website exists as an educational resource for those who are interested in the concept of Gender Leptivity! This concept is one that has a very popular following on Tumblr, but doesn't have a very thorough explanation. As such, it can be confusing for many people, including me! As such, I'm creating this site to help create a resource for those interested, and to create a simple guide on Gender Leptivity as a concept!

Note: This website is made primarily for computer usage, and as such, may not be the most accessible on smaller screens without the usage of zooming/scrolling.

What is Gender Leptivity?

That's a great question! And one that requires looking at three main concepts:

Leptivity/Leptrality¹ ²

So interestingly enough, there are actually two terms for gender leptivity and gender leptrality, but they refer to the same thing. They simply refer to the concept of using math and linguistics (in conjunction) to explain ones gender identity. They are a way of understanding gender and utilize aspects from relational algebra.

The tumblr user Leptrois explains all three terms (Leptrois, leptivity, and leptrality) as gender identities, spectrums, and systems that explain genders through positively, neutrally, and negatively charged terms. Leptrois also explains them as encompassing "gender experiences that are embracing with language and scientific studies."

Gender Arity/Leptarity³

Gender Arity, or Leptarity is a system used to classify gender systems by the amount of genders they typically have in their culture (or in one's analysis of their own experiences or culture). There are at least six gender arities, however this is not a minimum number. They are as follows:

  • Nullary: A lack of gender categories, or a conceptualization of gender not linked to arity.
  • Unary/monary: A system in which one gender category exists
  • Binary: A system in which two categories exist.
  • Trinary/Ternary: A system in which three categories exist.
  • Quadnary/Quadrinary/Quaternary: A system in which four categories exist.
  • Quinary/Quintary/Quinternary: A system in which five categories exist.
  • Senary/Hexanary/Sexary: A system in which six categories exist.

Some common examples of these are:

  • The Western World using a binary system.
  • Indigenous cultures tend to have ternary systems, and the Western World is slowly forming this, primarily within the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Traditional Bugis culture uses a quinternary system.
  • Traditional Jewish Culture uses a sexary system.

Leptrois (AKA the Leptive/Leptral Gender System)⁴

Leptrois, also known as the Leptive/Leptral Gender System, is the most popular leptive system of classifying gender identities. It is primarily mathematic and linguistic in nature. While leptivity is the concept, leptrois is the implementation.

Some common leptrois terms include, but are not limited to:

  • Negatrois/NGT: A negatively charged gender.
  • Positrois/PST: A positively charged gender.
  • Centrois: A gender charged somewhere between positively and negatively.
  • Neutrois: A gender charged neutrally, or in the middle of every other gender.
  • Nucleotrois: A neutrally charged identity, with a slight positive charge.
  • Electrois: A neutrally charged identity, with a slight negative charge.
  • Equitrois/zerotrois: An identity charged both simultaneously as negatrois and positrois. A zero charged identity.
  • Infinitrois: "Infinitive equity. Leptrois light." An identity with infinite charge.
  • Nulltrois: There is no singular definition for this. It describes a null gender.
  • Ambitrois/amplitrois: An identity of ambivalent or amplified charge, or an identity of a fluid charge.

Other terms might also be within the Leptral Gender System, however, these are the most commonly used terms. They all have subterms as well! Click on them to learn more! (note: Most of these pages have not been created yet, so clicking on these will do nothing unless the term is underlined.)
